What is Toastmasters?

Imagine…

…standing in front of an audience, and actually loving the good butterflies in your stomach.
…or if you are a confident speaker, looking out at the audience and knowing that you have developed your skills significantly recently, and become even more able to connect and inspire the audience.

What would that be like for you?

These are some of the reasons to join Toastmasters.

From a humble beginning in 1924 at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, Toastmasters International has grown to become a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The nonprofit organization now has over 313,000 members in almost 15,000 clubs in 126 countries, offering a proven – and enjoyable! – way to practice and hone communication and leadership skills. Since 2010, Malmö has had a Toastmasters club of its own, with meetings in English.

How does it work?
Our meetings usually include about 20 people and last for up to two hours. Participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared or an impromptu speech to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian.

Members learn communication skills by working in the Competent Communication manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignments designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking. Participants learn skills related to use of humor, gestures, eye contact, speech organization and overall delivery. When finished with this manual, members can choose from 15 advanced manuals to learn skills related to specific interests.

Members also learn leadership skills by taking on various meeting roles and serving as officers at the club and district levels, and by working in the Competent Leadership manual and the High Performance Leadership program. In our learn-by-doing approach, we don’t lecture our members about leadership skills; we give them responsibilities and ask them to lead.

There is no instructor; instead, each speech and meeting is critiqued by a fellow member in a positive manner, focusing on what was done well and effecively and what could be improved.

How do I join and how much does it cost?

Being a guest at meetings is free. You can come and explore if this is something you like, 3 times. If you decide to join, have a conversation with us and fill in a membership form. The first year of membership costs 1 100 SEK.

You pay to our Bankgiro account number is 660-3971. This price includes two manuals, Competent Communication and Competent Leadership, and a subscription to Toastmaster magazine. As a member, you may take on meeting roles such as giving speeches; participate in Toastmasters conferences and contests; and join other special events.

We hope that Malmö Toastmasters can help you to become the leader and communicator you want to be, and we look forward to meeting you in person!
